One size fits all: how to check the fit of jackets, pants, and skirts

For a jacket, leave room for what you wear underneath

Compare the product measurements with a jacket you find comfortable. Consider whether you’ll wear it with a T-shirt or a thicker layer. The room you need will vary.

For our jackets, S–XL is a guide. The front fastens with an inner and an outer button; it is not a belt that lets you choose any fastening point. When trying it on, check that you can move your arms and sit down without the closure pulling.

For trousers, distinguish between the width at rest and when stretched

The waistbands on our samples are measured flat. The Comfortable Cotton measures approximately 32 cm unstretched and 60–65 cm stretched. The Elastic Cotton measures approximately 35 cm and 70 cm, respectively.

These are not body measurements, and the maximum stretch does not mean it will be comfortable. Also compare the leg width and length. The size guidance for the Elastic model does not automatically apply to the Comfortable model. You can follow the steps in our measurement guide.

For an asymmetrical skirt, check two lengths

On the Waterproof Skirt, the sample measures 80 cm at the front and 100 cm at the back. The height at which you wear the waistband and your height affect where the hem will fall.

Measure one of your own skirts from the waist and compare both lengths. Don’t use the waist width of a pair of trousers as if it were that of this skirt: each garment should be checked separately.

What information helps answer a question

• The exact name of the product you’re interested in.
• Measurements of one of your own garments laid flat.
• Whether you prefer to wear it looser or closer to your body.
• The height at which you usually wear the waistband, where applicable.
