Dressing tone-on-tone means bringing together garments from the same color family, even if their textures and shades differ. With a solid-colored jacket and trousers, you can put together an outfit that’s easy to choose and then wear both pieces separately.

What tone-on-tone means

You don’t need everything to be exactly the same color. A lighter shade, a heathered fabric or a surface that reflects more light can all be part of the same combination. Look at the whole outfit and decide which differences you like.

If you’d rather start with low contrast, choose a color family you already wear. Sand and Taupe are two options to compare. If you enjoy color, you can explore Emerald or Chocolate. The choice is yours: coordinating doesn’t mean you have to stick to neutrals.

Start with Denim and trousers

The Denim jacket and our two pairs of trousers share color names. That makes it easier to find a matching pair, but it’s worth looking at each photo: the fabric and lighting can change how the shade looks.

One option is Sand Denim with Sand Stretch Cotton. You can add a light-colored T-shirt you already own and let the double collar and wrap front give the jacket its shape.

Another pairing is Chocolate Denim with Chocolate Comfortable Cotton. If you’re unsure which of the two trousers to choose, compare their hems and waistbands in the guide to the styles.

Let the textures show

On a solid-colored outfit, you can see the folds, the jacket’s wrap front and the drape of the trouser leg. Open the photo and look at the fabric detail. A thumbnail helps you choose where to start; an enlarged image helps you understand the garment better.

Try the jacket open and buttoned over the same base layer. Wear its double collar with the layers separated and see how you like the front shape. It has a button closure, not a belt-adjustable sizing system.

To vary the outfit, you can change just the T-shirt, shoes, or bag. The appeal of coordinating two pieces is also being able to wear them separately: another day, the jacket with your usual pants and the pants with a different blouse.

Another silhouette with a Waterproof jacket and skirt

If you’d like a different bottom, compare the Topo Waterproof jacket with the Topo skirt. The skirt has an elastic waistband, tie, and pockets; it is sold separately.

Waterproof is the name of the windbreaker line. It is not equivalent to a technical waterproof garment for heavy or prolonged rain. To choose based on use and see how to make the most of both pieces, see the Waterproof outfit guide.

Check both pieces before deciding

Check each product page: color, measurements, and availability. Two coordinated pieces don’t have the same measurements and won’t necessarily fit the same way. Compare them with your own clothes and leave room for what you’ll wear under the jacket.

In the outfit configurator, confirm both selections before adding them. A jacket and pants are different styles; that pairing alone does not activate the Friends Pack discount. The cart confirms the applicable price.

If you need an initial color idea, go back to the pieces you wear most often. Then explore your Denim and choose the pants you prefer. A put-together outfit can also leave you free to change things up tomorrow.
